Tension at the Te Deum on May 25: Milei avoided greeting Vice President Villarruel
In the midst of the formal ceremony for the Te Deum on May 25, President Javier Milei experienced a tense moment upon arriving at the Metropolitan Cathedral.
The president avoided greeting the mayor of Buenos Aires City, Jorge Macri, and Vice President Victoria Villarruel, who were waiting for him at the entrance along with other authorities.
The gesture was evident and was recorded in the official broadcast. Milei got out of the presidential vehicle, approached with his gaze straight ahead, did not extend his hand to those waiting in line, and continued walking directly into the cathedral, causing visible discomfort on the faces of Macri and Villarruel.
The awkward situation arose minutes before the start of the religious celebration, when Milei entered the Cathedral with part of her cabinet.
After avoiding greeting the Mayor of Buenos Aires, Jorge Macri, Milei also did not greet the Vice President, Victoria Villarruel. She passed him and continued on her way, while the President of the Senate gave a disgruntled smile.
The gesture generated tension in the Metropolitan Cathedral and was captured on the broadcast.
The Vice president then walked with the president through the Cathedral until they finally separated and settled down to hear Archbishop Jorge García Cuerva's remarks.
Meanwhile, the President, concluding his participation in the May 25th celebrations, attended the changing of the guard of the Patricios Infantry Regiment, which took place in Plaza de Mayo, following the Te Deum at the Buenos Aires Cathedral.
Milei followed the traditional ceremony flanked by the head of government, Jorge Macri, and Vice President Victoria Villarruel, with whom he did not exchange glances or words, after not having greeted them at the Cathedral during the Te Deum.
The full and glorious ceremony
