Catholic Church sanctions gender change for one of the Three Wise Men

Advent calendar turns Melchior into “Melchora”

Bamburg/Munich – They bring the Christ Child gold, frankincense and myrrh – and a huge surprise!

The ecumenical association “Andere Zeiten” from Hamburg is currently selling a calendar (“The other Advent for children”) – also in Munich.

In it, the ancient story of the Three Wise Men is told in a completely different way. There they are called Balthasar, Kaspar and – Melchora!

The calendar with the gender Bible story has been sold 62,000 times, says the head of the association, Frank Hofmann.

When asked by BILD, he said: "With the children's calendar, it is particularly important to us to appeal to both girls and boys. Since the biblical model does not specify the number or gender of the wise men, it was obvious to play with tradition here." So: make a king a queen - to Melchora.

By the star of Bethlehem! In fact, the Gospel of Matthew does not say that the wise men were men. Or that there were three. Sometimes there are two - sometimes even twelve.

The Archdiocese of Munich-Freising wrote in response to an inquiry: “It is generally to be welcomed when Christian beliefs are made accessible to children in a child-friendly way.”
