Synodalists start awarding prizes to Synodalists for being good Synodalists

"FEARLESS VOICE FOR A CONTEMPORARY CHRISTIANITY"

Ecumenical Prize of the Catholic Academy for theologian Rahner

Johanna Rahner is a theology professor at the University of Tübingen.

For them, ecumenism does not consist in half-hearted compromises, but in the common and thorough search for the truth: The Catholic Academy in Bavaria has honored the dogmatist Johanna Rahner for her scientific work.

The Tübingen theologian Johanna Rahner (61) has been honored with the Ecumenical Prize of the Catholic Academy in Bavaria. She accepted the award, worth 10,000 euros, at a ceremony in Munich on Friday evening. This honors Rahner's scientific work, who has been writing books, articles, encyclopedia entries and reviews on ecumenism for two decades, according to the academy's statement. Rahner analyzes difficult topics in a razor-sharp manner and speaks openly and pointedly about conditions that need improvement on all sides - "and is convincing in her arguments with the highest and most precise theological level."

Rahner holds the Chair for Dogmatics, History of Dogma and Ecumenical Theology at the Eberhard Karls University in Tübingen. She is also director of the Institute for Ecumenical and Interreligious Research there. "For Johanna Rahner, ecumenism does not consist in half-hearted compromises, but in the joint and thorough search for the truth - which can also lead to changing one's own position for good reasons," said the academy. "In discussions, she repeatedly refers to buried traditions that are, in a deeper sense, 'Catholic' and tries to overcome limitations from the past."

Cathcon:  Ah yes, the convenient myth of buried traditions that carries the unfortunate implication that the Church and her doctrine have been deceptive.

Huber: Freedom of conscience and courage shape attitudes

The former council chairman of the Evangelical Church in Germany, Wolfgang Huber, emphasized in his laudatory speech that freedom of conscience and courage shaped Rahner's ecumenical stance. She brings her great theological qualities to practical use in discussions and is at the same time a member of many ecumenical committees. Huber called Rahner an “intrepid voice for contemporary Christianity.”

The Ecumenical Prize of the Catholic Academy in Bavaria has been awarded since 1995 for special commitment to the ecumenism of the Catholic Church with the churches of the Reformation. The award winners in recent years include the International Cross of Nails Community of Coventry, the Catholic Munich Cardinal Reinhard Marx together with Bavaria's Protestant regional bishop Heinrich Bedford-Strohm and the current Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier.
