Saint Egidio receives money from German state to integrate refugees in Italy

"It does not seem to me that this controversy concerns us since we deal with people who have arrived regularly in Italy and we help them to integrate in our country".

The President of the Community of Sant'Egidio, Marco Impagliazzo, clarifies in an interview with Repubblica the contours of the collaboration with the German government. "The Community of Sant'Egidio has had regular relations with the German government for years. To be precise this has been going on since when Helmut Khol was chancellor, then during Angela Merkel's chancellorship, and now with Scholz. It is a matter,' Impagliazzo explained to the newspaper, 'of funds that support the development cooperation work we have in Africa, for example the free Dream project to combat HIV/AIDS, and conflict resolution such as the commitment to disarmament in the Central African Republic'. On the subject of migrants, he adds: 'Recently we have asked for government support for the integration of migrants who have arrived in Italy legally: regular migrants and people who have applied for international protection. These people are engaged in a process of autonomy precisely to prevent them from ending up in irregularity. Integration,' he continues, 'passes through an accommodation system spread throughout the country, particularly in the most depopulated areas of the country, and this means supporting housing, medical care, job training, care giver courses, and the study of the Italian language.
