Archbishop Gänswein, jobseeker
Gänswein is still looking for a job in Freiburg
"Am looking for a job"
Archbishop Georg Gänswein, who was transferred by the pope, wants to help out where he is needed in the archdiocese of Freiburg. At a book launch, the former papal secretary now let it be known that his future remains uncertain.
"I'm here now, I'm looking for work, so to speak," the longtime private secretary to former German Pope Benedict XVI said Thursday evening at a book launch in Kirchzarten in Baden-Württemberg.
Pope Francis had expelled Gänswein from the Vatican in mid-June back to his home bishopric of Freiburg.
According to observers, the background to this was the relationship between Francis and Gänswein, which has been considered difficult for many years.
Pope gave him vacation recommendation
A native of the Black Forest, Gänswein had looked after the pontiff emeritus as his closest confidant until Benedict's death on New Year's Eve 2022.
Gänswein published the book "Nothing but the Truth" about his time in Rome. Francis had advised him to take a vacation for now, the 67-year-old Gänswein said.
He confirmed he was staying at the Freiburg seminary.
Gänswein now "at home" in Freiburg.
The Archdiocese had announced in July that the well-known Catholic clergyman would lead regular services in Freiburg Cathedral.
However, he does not have a permanent job in the Archdiocese. Archbishop Stephan Burger officiates in Freiburg.
"I am now at home here" - with these words the Rome returnee said goodbye to his listeners.
