Vatican to investigate Sodalitium abuse cases in Peru

According to the Peruvian newspaper 'La Republica', an investigation into allegations of sexual abuse will begin on Tuesday 25 July at the Sodalitium.

A Vatican commission, dedicated to cases of sexual abuse committed by members of the Catholic Church, will begin investigations against the Sodalitium Christianae Vitae in Peru. The mission, according to sources, would be led by Charles Scicluna and Jordi Bertomeu, members of the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith. The Spaniard Jordi Bertomeu was the Pope's envoy a few months ago to investigate the cases of abuse committed by Jesuits in Bolivia.

The enquiries will officially begin on Tuesday 25 July, with the participation of complainants and members of the Sodalitium's leadership. The interviews will take place in the Apostolic Nunciature of Peru, which belongs to Vatican territory. Once Scicluna-Bertomeu's work in Peru is completed, they will have to draw up a report that will be handed over to Pope Francis, who will finally give a verdict on the case.

"In the event that the Vatican commission completes its work in the country and finds evidence that the organisation is corrupt, sectarian and mafia-like, they could close them down. And that would set a historical precedent and would shake a great many organisations of the characteristics of the Sodalitium," one of the informants warned La República. "They are very efficient. They don't miss anything and their reports are usually very strong," he said.

The Sodalitium of Christian Life in Peru depends on the Dicastery for Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life in Peru, which has so far failed to address the problem.

Cathcon: All this stems from the post-Conciliar break up of properly ordered religious life in the pre-existing orders.  They tried to make substitutes and it has all spectacularly failed.
