World Synod without Stetter-Karp: Women complain to the Vatican

Too much time on her hands after retirement in 2020

Participants of the Women in Church Ministries Forum see the non-appointment of Irme Stetter-Karp as an affront.

In an open letter last week, former members of the so-called Forum Women in Ministries and Offices in the Church of the terminated Synodal Way addressed various persons in the Vatican. The letter was triggered by the fact that the president of the ZdK was not appointed to the Synod. Cardinal Jean-Claude Hollerich, Cardinal Mario Grech and Sister Nathalie Becquart are named in the letter.

Recommendation ignored

In the letter, the signatories criticise the selection of the participants of the World Synod in Rome. Irme Stetter-Karp had been proposed by the German participants of the Continental Synod in Prague as a voting member of the World Synod. As is well known, Stetter-Karp was not considered. According to the signatories, this decision is an affront.

Already in the past, Rome had not considered the German Central Committee as a representative of the German laity. For example, the ZdK was not invited to a congress in the Vatican on cooperation between priests and laity. Furthermore, a meeting of the presidium of the controversial Synodal Way with the Pope, repeatedly demanded by the German Bishops' Conference and the ZdK, never took place.

Lay functionaries are outraged

The latest open letter from German lay functionaries came about at a follow-up meeting of participants in the Women's Forum. The incoming information, according to the open letter, about which persons from Germany would have the right to vote at the World Synod, had caused great dissatisfaction in the group. According to the letter, this led to the decision not to accept this decision without comment.
