Police confiscate Cardinal's laptop and mobile telephone

During the perjury investigations against Cologne Archbishop Rainer Maria Woelki, the officials temporarily confiscated the cardinal's personal mobile telephone and laptop. The investigators took both devices with them during the searches on Tuesday, said a spokesman for the Cologne public prosecutor on Thursday. The data was backed up, and then Woelki got his telephone and laptop back. The “Kölner Stadt-Anzeiger” had previously reported.

Criminal investigations have been underway against Woelki for months. Prosecutors are investigating whether the archbishop made false statements under oath about when he was informed of abuse cases. Woelki has rejected all allegations.
