Bishop speaks out on womb renting

Monsignor Suetta, Bishop of Ventimiglia Sanremo, on the law on the uterus for rent: it is an inhuman practice!

We publish the clear and catholic words issued by His Excellency Monsignor Suetta in an interview with the Secolo d'Italia on the upcoming law on the uterus for rent as a universal crime.

Uterus for rent, Monsignor Suetta: "It is an inhuman practice. Right to make it a universal crime".

Parliament's first yes (pending debate in the House next 19 June) to surrogacy as a universal crime is welcome. The turnaround imposed by the centre-right majority on surrogacy is welcomed by the Italian bishops. They have long been sounding the alarm about the practice of surrogacy as a 'universal problem'.

Uterus for rent, the bishops welcome the first yes to recognition as a universal crime

The bishop of Ventimiglia-Sanremo, Monsignor Antonio Suetta, questioned by Adnkronos, does not hide his satisfaction. "Because I believe that surrogacy is one of the most obviously immoral and unnatural situations. I hope that this type of reflection will continue and that this inhuman practice will be curbed as much as possible'. On the leftist barricades, the Bishop has no doubts. "Unfortunately, there is ideological overkill. And here I use very strongly the expression used by the Pope. He has often referred to ideological colonisation. And it really is so'.

Bishop Suetta: it is an inhuman practice fruit of an ideological drift

The roots of this drift are very ancient, he adds. "They must be sought far back in time. And they are deeply anti-Christian and anti-Catholic roots. They have long pervaded thought in general. In this anthropological drift, these ideologies also greatly condition the political and economic life of countries". Ideologies, clarifies Monsignor Suetta, that have in common the desire to deconstruct for fundamentally manipulative and power-driven purposes. "I am thinking of the big lobbies that tend to suffocate the autonomy of states. And also political activity itself'.

No shipwreck of legal civilisation

The Bishop also disputes those who speak of the shipwreck of legal civilisation in the case of the universal offence of womb renting. "Just as there is a common line of action between States naturally sanctioned by pacts and treaties, it is a matter of recognising that this is an intrinsically negative practice. And therefore from a legal perspective, despite the fact that some states allow it, it remains a serious crime against the child and the women used for this inhuman practice. To recognise therefore that it must be prosecuted is an outcome of good law'. The risk in the international application could also exist," he admits, "but I believe that this thought and practical implication does not detract from the goodness of the measure. "We must first affirm the principle and then apply it. Also the fact that it is discussed. And highlighting the reasons for it is already a significant contribution to awakening consciences'.
