Modernism destroys sense of the sacred

A church all in white - the new chancel in Ampflwang

The church in Ampflwang was a special project. The new chancel was to be bright and flooded with light. White concrete is ideal when very light surfaces are desired. The altar table was also cast in concrete to match the white concrete floor.

The artist Lena Göbel designed the altar room for the church in Ampflwang im Hausruck and was commissioned with the design. When it came to white concrete, she thought of us. It is not a matter of course that such a project comes about, because the concrete also has to be specially mixed by the supplier. Instead of conventional cement, we use white cement, which on the one hand is not always available and on the other hand is also an expense for the concrete suppliers. For us, this means that we have to work hard in advance! But when the time has come and the concrete plant has been found and is ready to make the effort, the concrete mass is supplemented with pigments and the still liquid white concrete is placed, drawn off and allowed to dry briefly. With smoothing machines and by hand, the surface is winged until it is even and "reflective" as we concrete specialists say. After drying, a finish is created with wax. After

Before

The Cross is gone.  The Holy Spirit is gone.  The All-seeing Divine Eye is gone.

The stations are now on the West wall and I suspect unused.
