Synodalists dictating to Bishops

Aachen Diocesan Council calls for consequences of Synodal Path

"The Bishops have to show that they are serious about what was discussed and decided in the Synodal Path": that is why the Aachen Diocesan Council now has a series of demands to its head pastor Helmut Dieser.

One and a half months after the conclusion of the Synodal Path, the representation of the laity in the Diocese of Aachen is insisting on consequences. In a resolution published on Tuesday, the Diocesan Council of Catholics calls on Bishop Helmut Dieser to implement reforms. "The bishops must show that they are serious about what was discussed and decided in the Synodal Path. This also applies to the diocese of Aachen," the committee declared.

Among other things, the Diocesan Council demands the creation of a Synodal advisory and decision-making body for the diocese. In future, the faithful must be involved in the election of bishops. There should also be blessing ceremonies for queer couples and remarried divorcees. The Diocesan Council also calls on him to lobby the Vatican for the abolition of compulsory celibacy for priests and for the admission of women to all ordained offices in the Church.

The Synodal Way had come to an end at the beginning of March in Frankfurt with a fifth plenary assembly. Bishops and other church members had deliberated for a good three years on the future of the Catholic Church in Germany. The implementation of the decisions is now partly the responsibility of the individual local bishops. The Vatican had already rejected the creation of Synodal Advisory bodies in January.
