Priest left behind complete documentation of his crimes of abuse. Case concealed by Church authorities

Terrible discovery in house of dead priest!

Edmund Dillinger from Friedrichsthal took his dark secret to the grave - and shocked posterity with his photo archive.

The Diocese of Trier is once again rocked by a case of abuse. The now deceased priest Edmund Dillinger (†87) is alleged to have abused minors over decades and to have taken photographs of the acts.

The extent and ultimately hundreds of proofs of this were provided by his nephew Steffen. This was first reported by the Rhein-Zeitung (RZ). The nephew took care of his dementia-stricken uncle until Dillinger's death in November 2022. The latter lived in seclusion in Friedrichsthal.

When he entered Edmund Dillinger's house after his death to administer the estate, he discovered gruesome pictures in the study. Steffen Dillinger in the RZ interview: "I suddenly held documents in my hand that first made me freeze in shock."

Edmund Dillinger had been making pornographic pictures on about 700 slide films since the 1960s. Mostly men, adolescents, but also clearly minors can be seen on them. According to media reports, some of the photos are "hardcore pornographic". Nephew Steffen Dillinger: "You can see how he dared more and more. How he slipped further and further disinhibited - he obviously had nothing to fear."

The abuses are said to have taken place on pilgrimages, church retreats or even on trips to Africa. Edmund Dillinger was born in Trier and worked as a chaplain and teacher in Saarbrücken and Saarlouis (including at the Max-Planck-Gymnasium). He was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit for his commitment to development aid for Africa.

His life was an entire sham

Unbelievable: Dillinger's nephew even discovered a diary in which his uncle comprehensibly documented the sexual abuse of the victims. Steffen Dillinger: "It had a dimension that really left me speechless." For him, his uncle's case is "like looking into an abyss". The nephew continues: "What are we talking about? Yes, about documented abuse over five decades."

What role do superiors play in the Catholic Church? Obviously, the diocese responsible, Trier, once again did not cover itself with glory.

In 2012, the accusations are said to have arisen. There were references to incidents from the 1970s. Consequence: Dillinger was merely transferred to North Rhine-Westphalia and was no longer allowed to read masses. The public prosecutor's office was called in, but according to BILD information, the investigation was discontinued because it was time-barred. His nephew Steffen: "He denied everything until the end." The Church never went public with the case.

Already in 2012, new accusations had been raised with the Vicariate General in this direction, which added up to indications of incidents during a pilgrimage to Rome in 1971. The reprimanding consequence at that time was the temporary transfer from Rhineland-Palatinate to North Rhine-Westphalia. Because of the old case, which was on record, no further punishment was imposed after reinstatement. Although the diocese had been aware of Dillinger's paedophilic tendencies since 1971, he remained in the teaching profession until 1999. It was not until 2012 that he was banned from dealing with children and young people. In 2013, however, Dillinger was preventively banned from public celebrations
