Cardinal Hollerich believes that same-sex couples can be blessed

In the "La Stampa" interview, the Luxembourg cardinal also comments on the requirement of celibacy for Catholic priests.

Luxembourg Archbishop Cardinal Jean-Claude Hollerich has spoken out openly to blessings on homosexual couples in the Catholic Church. To bless means to wish someone good, and God does not wish anyone bad, said Hollerich in an interview with the Italian daily "La Stampa" (Saturday). "I think the church can only change its attitude after a long process," he added. "But we must strive to speed up the process: we must open the doors to everyone."

(Cathcon: On this theory, you could end up with blessing evil without any attempt to discriminate between good and evil)

According to current Catholic teaching, homosexual acts violate the divine order of creation and are sinful. At the same time, homosexuals should be treated "with respect, compassion and tact," according to the Catechism of the Catholic Church.

Hollerich also commented on the requirement of celibacy for Catholic priests. He himself lives celibacy with great joy. "But I know many priests who suffer because of it," said the cardinal. In addition, there are fewer and fewer young men in many parts of the world who want to become priests. He wondered whether married men should not also receive ordination. "But that's a decision that the pope has to make together with the entire church," said Hollerich.

Francis recently appointed the Luxembourger to his most important advisory body, the Cardinal Council. Hollerich also has a key role in the World Synod proclaimed by the Pope. This should help the Church "to enter into a dialogue with the world and the present and to listen to everyone in order to understand what people are striving for," said the cardinal.

The church should no longer be understood as a "clerical dictatorship". Popes, cardinals, bishops and priests are part of the people of God - just like lay people who are not ordained. "We cannot be priests and bishops without the people - we are for the people," said Hollerich.

At the forthcoming synod of bishops, the Luxemburger is the "general relator". In this function, he summarizes the status of the deliberations at important points and thus has a decisive influence on the formulation of draft resolutions. The topic of the Synod meeting in October 2023 and 2024 is the transformation of the Catholic Church into a "Synodal Church".

Cathcon: all points to a manipulation of the final outcome, unless we think that Cardinal Hollerich has some special inspiration from the Holy Spirit denied to others.
