Francis seems set to oust traditional-friendly Bishop for the crime of successfully promoting vocations

The future darkens for the Diocese of Fréjus-Toulon

At a time when the Church in Germany is on the verge of schism and the reactions of the Vatican are almost non-existent (“The synodal path takes decisions which do not correspond exactly to what is the current doctrine of the Church”, declared Cardinal Pietro Parolin, Secretary of State of the Holy See), the news coming from the Diocese of Fréjus-Toulon is not good according to Current Values. Bishop Rey, one of the most courageous and dynamic Bishops, seems to be on the verge of being purely and simply ousted from his own Diocese.

“The ecclesiastical hierarchy must now give its verdict on the future of the diocese and mainly of its 70-year-old bishop (…) What will happen to Bishop Dominique Rey? “His fate is sealed”, confides a religious, for whom “the conclusions are already written”. “They are going to get the Bishop out or at least make him inoperative”, tables a source familiar with the matter. A second option that would calm the enthusiastic and sometimes dangerous outbursts of the prelate. If this scenario is confirmed by the Vatican, Bishop Rey would have a co-adjutor bishop imposed on him. “Rey would then be a puppet bishop, while the co-adjutor would have full powers,” explains a connoisseur of canon law.

“Everyone expects Bishop Rey to leave,” testifies a parishioner from Toulon. “The dismissal of the bishop is on the table”, warns another, who abounds: “The decision is recorded, all that remains is to formalize it" (…)

The suspension of ordinations is experienced as a profound injustice by the faithful of the Var. “It is a disproportionate severity, we are made to pay for having left the door open to traditions, protests a faithful. At a time when there are only 1.5% of churchgoers in France, and the Church is on the verge of a schism in Germany, the urgency is elsewhere. On paper, however, no explicit mention is made of the issue of tradition. But while the motu proprio Traditionis custodes strictly frames the Mass in extraordinary form, the tradis see in this decision of the Sovereign Pontiff a first showdown with the “progressive” fringe of Rome.
