Catholic Bishop: the future of the Church is female

The Lenten campaign of the Catholic Episcopal relief organisation, Misereor was officially opened on Sunday in Augsburg Cathedral. Under the title "Woman. Power. Change", the focus this year is on women who are involved in and shape social change worldwide, Misereor announced. In his sermon, Augsburg Bishop Bertram Meier said that it is women "who give everything as heroines to serve life."

Meier recalled the commitment of mothers to their children and the protection of the family. He also knows "women who courageously raise their voices in dictatorships for freedom, against oppression and violence". They are inspiring personalities, he said. "Dear women: You are strong! I prophesy: the future of the Church is female," the Bishop said.

This year's action has a focus on women in Madagascar. Meier cited the work of Sister Modestine Rasolofoarivola as a positive example. With her organisation Vahatra, she supports women in living independently and self-determined lives. Taratra Rakotomamonyi, who is also currently a guest of Misereor, is also committed to defending the rights of women and children, promoting educational opportunities, especially for girls, and improving the position of women in Madagascar's largely patriarchal society.

The Church will be lucky to be Episcopal at the rate the German Church is going

Meier is convinced that Lent should be used for critical self-assurance. Often it is people in the richer industrialised countries who live at the expense of others and cause suffering in many parts of the world. In the weeks before Easter, one could reflect on a decision "between what serves life and what will sooner or later bring me to ruin".

Until Easter, Misereor, which works with partner organisations in 87 countries in Africa and the Middle East, Asia and Oceania, Latin America and the Caribbean, will provide information about its project work and ask for donations. On 26 March, donations will then be collected for Misereor in all Catholic parishes in Germany.

The Episcopal Relief Organisation, Misereor is one of the largest aid organisations of the Catholic Church in Germany. It was founded in 1958, has its headquarters in Aachen and, according to its own figures, has supported more than 113,000 projects since then.

Galatians 3:27-28 speaks against the Bishop's idea

27 For as many of you as have been baptized in Christ, have put on Christ.

Quicumque enim in Christo baptizati estis, Christum induistis.

28 There is neither Jew nor Greek: there is neither bond nor free: there is neither male nor female. For you are all one in Christ Jesus.

Non est Judaeus, neque Graecus : non est servus, neque liber : non est masculus, neque femina. Omnes enim vos unum estis in Christo Jesu.
