Most Rev Vincent Nichols to be named as head of English Catholics

The Archbishop of Birmingham, the Most Rev Vincent Nichols, will be announced today as the new Roman Catholic Archbishop of Westminster.
Archbishop Nichols, 63, an orthodox Bishop who has become more conservative over the last few years, is expected to succeed Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O’Connor soon after Easter.
He was chosen personally by Pope Benedict XVI after he returned from his recent trip to Africa when the Congregation for Bishops failed to agree on a successor to the Cardinal, who will be the first Archbishop of Westminster not to die in office.
The runner-up Arthur Roche, Bishop of Leeds, who was supported by the Cardinal but who has been criticised in recent by conservatives within and outside his diocese for his record on church closures, could now be invited to take up a senior position with the Congregation for Divine Worship in Rome.
