Pope to visit Rome Synagogue
International news - Radio Netherlands Worldwide - English:
Pope Benedict XVI is to make his first visit to Rome's synagogue in the autumn. In 1986 the late Pope John Paul II became the first pontiff to visit Rome's synagogue. Relations between the Catholic Church and Jews have been troubled for centuries. A few months ago they came under renewed strain when the pope reinstated a traditionalist bishop who denies the full extent of the Holocaust. Pope Benedict has since demanded that British bishop Richard Williamson publicly retract his views.
