Revd Father brings churches together
"The old Our Lady of Guadalupe church is now a catechetical center that is used to teach young people the Catholic faith, for ESL classes and other community activities. It is known as the Juan Diego Center, named for the man who saw the Virgin one December day in 1531 and later convinced his bishop that his vision was authentic by bringing him roses in winter. Masses are no longer said there.
St. Veronica's, a few blocks away at 149 Christopher St., is the newest addition to the Guadalupe parish. It went from being a separate parish to being a mission church on April 1. Masses continue to be said daily and on weekends. Worshipers there were relieved rather than saddened because St. Veronica's had been on the cardinal's original list for possible closing.
'We're grateful because this insures our survival,' said Grace Hogan, a Greenwich Village resident who volunteers on a regular basis in the mission church. She added: 'We have a plethora of gorgeous churches in this area, but the population has changed. The area is a lot different than it once was but no less in need of places to worship God.'"
Bit more imagination here than in other cases.
