We just learned about the Catholic Church Conservation blog and we wish to bring to your attention plans to close an active parish church in the City of Cold Lake in Alberta, Canada. In spite of serving over one hundred families, the parish of Our Lady of Assumption in Cold Lake is being threatened with closure. The local Catholic school district has indicated that it plans to purchase the church land and the church building to expand a neighboring Catholic school. More information on this issue can be found here: www.saveassumptionparish.com

This website includes information on the planned parish closure, a short history of the parish, comments and contact information. Time is of the essence, as the decision will be made verysoon on whether or not this active parish will be closed. Recently, parishioners have been encouraged to submit their questions and concerns to Bishop Luc Bouchard in St. Paul, Alberta. Bishop Bouchard will be visiting the parish on February 12, 2007. Parishioners believe that a portion of the church land should be sold so that the nearby school has room to expand, but Assumption Church should remain open. Satellite maps illustrate this well: http://saveassumptionparish.com/maps.html

The planned closure is not due to declining attendance at Mass, especially since the population of Cold Lake has been increasing dramatically during recent years. As well, the issue is not caused by a shortage of priests, as there is no indication that any clergy will leave the city if the church is actually closed. Please help us to publicize this issue. The contact information for our Bishop can be found on our website. If you wish to ask a representative of the parishioners some questions, please send an email to admin@saveassumptionparish.com.

It doesn't so much need saving, as reforming. It's a modernists delight.
