Closed Catholic Church became the Church of Satan. Who will dare live there?
Bochum: "Lost Place" to be razed to the ground – it had a sinister significance
A "lost place" in Bochum is now being demolished. Construction has begun, taking a piece of the city's eerie history away.
Another "lost place" in Bochum is headed for demolition. A "lost place" is a forgotten location that has long since ceased to be used for its original purpose and is slowly decaying due to neglect.
This time, it's a notorious church that has been abandoned for years. In Bochum, it's known by a creepy name.
"And another lost place disappears..." laments a Bochum resident. During a walk near the city center, he notices construction work at the parish hall of St. Antonius Church. The church, closed since 2008, is apparently being renovated.
However, the originally planned retirement home will not be built here. Instead, the interior of the so-called "Satan's Church" will be replaced by several condominiums. This will create new living space in the Antonius Quarter at the corner of Antoniusstrasse, Arnoldstrasse, and Bessemerstrasse. The exterior walls and the church tower will remain.
The meaning behind the nickname
This is quite big news for the people of the city. After all, in the years since the church closed, numerous pigeons have made themselves at home here and soiled the building. Graffiti artists have also defaced the walls. This is why the place is called "Satan's Church." A large image of Satan's head adorned the wall behind the altar until recently.
The red beast with horns, slanted eyes, and a protruding tongue has long since disappeared behind a layer of fresh paint. And now, construction debris is also changing the church's bleak appearance. "At least it's being repurposed and not demolished," a Bochum resident rejoices.
The website "antonius-quartier.de" advertises "stylish, modern, exclusive condominiums." They are planned to be between 30 and 165 square meters in size and built according to the stringent KfW 40 Plus energy standard. Additional features will include electric vehicle charging stations, video surveillance, and barrier-free design. The website already invites visitors to take a virtual tour. Who will dare to live in the former "Satan's Church"?
