Fellow-bishop wrote malicious obituary about Archbishop Gänswein
Bishop Nann's harsh criticism of Archbishop Gänswein in 2020
German Bishop Reinhold Nann, who works in Peru, harshly criticises Archbishop Georg Gänswein for being "deeply involved in the power games of the Curia" in the Vatican. Both know each other from the Freiburg seminary.
Bishop Reinhold Nann and Archbishop Georg Gänswein got to know each other from their priestly training at the Collegium Borromaeum in Freiburg.
In his current internet blog entitled "Georg Gänswein - An Obituary", Bishop Reinhold Nann (59) welcomes the fact that Gänswein (63), who like himself comes from the archdiocese of Freiburg, is concentrating for the time being on his task as private secretary to Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI. In return, he would no longer appear as prefect of the papal household "always beaming with smiles behind the Pope": "Now that's over - finally."
Francis had "clipped Gänswein's wings", Nann continued. He himself had long had the impression "that the clique around Benedict was manipulating the poor old Pope Emeritus quite vigorously and using him for their intrigues. And the mastermind of all this can only have been the secretary." Now, he said, he had become "overwrought", just like Cardinal Gerhard Ludwig Müller before him, whose post as Prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith Pope Francis had not renewed.
He prays every day for Pope Francis, Bishop Nann stressed, "that he will be able to distinguish the goats from the sheep in the Vatican and renew the Curia and the Church in the Holy Spirit". The clergyman, who was appointed bishop by Francis in 2017, added that Gänswein had already been "harsh in his verbal attacks" and "extremely conservative" during their time together in seminary. In a German parish, Gänswein would have been "unacceptable because of his polarising manner".
Gänswein was "harsh in verbal attack" and "extremely conservative".
Nann went to Peru more than 20 years ago and worked there as a parish priest in poor parishes in the capital Lima as well as in the Andean highlands and the Amazon region. As a bishop, he is responsible for the southern Peruvian prelature of Caraveli. There, only about 150,000 people live in an area similar in size to Baden-Württemberg, and 15 Catholic priests work in 22 parishes.
The Vatican had confirmed a few days ago that Gänswein would concentrate on his task as Benedict XVI's private secretary until further notice. However, nothing is known about a dismissal or leave of absence as Prefect of the Papal Household.
Previously, "Die Tagespost" and other media had reported that Gänswein's replacement was due, among other things, to the "unfortunate presentation" of a book by Cardinal Robert Sarah on priesthood and celibacy, to which Benedict XVI contributed an essay. The publication was taken by many as an affront to Francis.
Cathcon: These modernists should look in the mirror before criticising conservatives and traditionalists for being so nasty. The blog post was removed.
