Feast of the Beheading of Saint John the Baptist

Matthew 14

1 At the time Herod the Tetrarch heard the fame of Jesus.
In illo tempore audivit Herodes tetrarcha fama Jesu :

2 And he said to his servants: This is John the Baptist: he is risen from the dead, and therefore mighty works shew forth themselves in him.

3 For Herod had apprehended John and bound him, and put him into prison, because of Herodias, his brother's wife.

4 For John said to him: It is not lawful for thee to have her.
Dicebat enim illi Joannes : Non licet tibi habere eam.

5 And having a mind to put him to death, he feared the people: because they esteemed him as a prophet.
Et volens illum occidere, timuit populum : quia sicut prophetam eum habebant.

6 But on Herod's birthday, the daughter of Herodias danced before them: and pleased Herod.

7 Whereupon he promised with an oath, to give her anything she would ask of him.

8 But she being instructed before by her mother, said: Give me here in a dish the head of John the Baptist
At illa praemonita a matre sua : Da mihi, inquit, hic in disco caput Joannis Baptistae.

9 And the king was struck sad: yet because of his oath, and for them that sat with him at table, he commanded it to be given.

10 And he sent, and beheaded John in the prison.
Misitque et decollavit Joannem in carcere.

11 And his head was brought in a dish: and it was given to the damsel, and she brought it to her mother.

12 And his disciples came and took the body, and buried it, and came and told Jesus.
Et accedentes discipuli ejus, tulerunt corpus ejus, et sepelierunt illud : et venientes nuntiaverunt Jesu.

The Reading from the Martyrology

This Day, the Twenty-Ninth Day of August

The beheading of St. John the Baptist, who was put to death by Herod about the feast of Easter. However, the solemn commemoration takes place today, when his venerable head was found for the second time. It was afterwards solemnly carried to Rome, where it is kept in the church of St. Silvester, near Campo Marzio, and honored by the people with the greatest devotion.

At Rome, on Mount Aventine, the birthday of St. Sabina, martyr. Under the emperor Adrian, she was struck with the sword, and thus obtained the palm of martyrdom.

Also, at Rome, St. Candida, virgin and martyr, whose body was transferred to the church of St. Praxedes by Pope Paschal I.

At Antioch, in Syria, the birthday of the holy martyrs Nicaeas and Paul.

At Constantinople, the holy martyrs Hypatius, an Asiatic bishop, and Andrew, a priest, who for the worship of holy images, under Leo the Isaurian, after having their beards besmirched with pitch and set on fire, and the skin of their heads torn off, were beheaded.

At Perugia, St. Euthymius, a Roman, who fled from the persecution of Diocletian with his wife and his son Crescentius, and there rested in the Lord.

At Metz, St. Adelphus, bishop and confessor.

At Paris the demise of St. Merry, priest.

In England, St. Sebbi, king.

At Smyrna, the birthday of St. Basilla.

In the vicinity of Troyes, St. Sabina, a virgin, celebrated for virtues and miracles.

And elsewhere in divers places, many other holy martyrs, confessors, and holy virgins.

August is the Month of the Immaculate Heart of Mary

Composed by Saint John Henry Cardinal Newman, shortly after his reception into the One, True Fold of the Redeemer

Friday is the Day dedicated to the Christ's Passion and His Sacred Heart

Fridays are penitential days and Catholics are to keep in mind Christ's suffering and to sacrifice something for the sake of penance and discipline. The traditional way to do this is to abstain from meat. On this day also, many Catholics make what is known as the "First Fridays Devotion" in honor of the Sacred Heart. This entails going to Mass and receiving Communion in reparation to the Sacred Heart on the first Friday of the month for nine consecutive months (see Devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus). Another Friday practice is to kneel and pray five Paters and five Aves, especially at 3:00pm, the hour Christ died on the Cross.

The Sorrowful Mysteries of the Rosary are prayed on Friday
"I would like to remind you that the Rosary is a biblical prayer, all filled with the Holy Scriptures." It is a prayer from the heart, in which the repetition of the Ave Maria directs the thought and affection towards Christ, and thus is made a confident prayer to Him and our Mother. It is a prayer that helps to meditate on the Word of God and assimilate the Eucharistic Communion, on the model of Mary who kept in her heart everything Jesus did and said and even His Presence. " Pope Benedict XVI

The Reading of the Rule of Saint Benedict for August 29

LXXI.

CHAPTER 71: THAT THEY SHOULD OBEY  ONE ANOTHER

1 Not only is the blessing of obedience to be shown by all to the abbot; the brothers must also obey one another,
2 knowing that by this path of obedience they go to God.
3 The commands, therefore, of the abbot or the superiors appointed by him (to which we allow no unofficial orders to be preferred) are to  be given precedence.
4 For the rest let all the younger brothers obey their elders with all love and courtesy.
5 Anyone who is found to be quarrelsome is to be corrected.
6 If anyone is rebuked by the abbot or by any superior in any way for however small a cause,
7 or if he comes to believe that any superior is angered or perplexed about him, however trivially; 8 he should immediately and without delay cast himself on the ground at his feet, remaining there to do penance until the turmoil is healed by the other's blessing.
9 But if any one is too haughty to do this, he should be subjected to corporal punishment: if he remains unyielding, he must be expelled from the monastery.

May the Passion of Jesus Christ be always in our hearts

"The Cross is our trophy against the demons, our sword against sin, and the sword Christ used to pierce the serpent. The Cross is the Father's will, the glory of the Only-Begotten, the joy of the Spirit, the pride of the angels, the guarantee of the Church." -St. John Chrysostom
