Cardinal - German Synodalists attempting to co-opt Pope Leo to their cause

Kurt Koch: "I'm concerned by how Pope Leo XIV is being co-opted in Germany"

"One must listen carefully to whether what the majority of German bishops understand by synodality and what Pope Leo understands by it are even congruent," explained Curia Cardinal Kurt Koch in a recent television interview with EWTN German.

EWTN.TV is the world's largest Catholic television broadcaster and, with its 11 channels in various languages, reaches more than 435 million households.

Curia Cardinal Kurt Koch, he told the television station, believes it is "very important" at the moment "to listen carefully to what the Holy Father is saying. I'm a little concerned about the way Pope Leo is now being co-opted in Germany."

Pope Leo "gave a beautiful example of what he understands by Synodality, already in the Urbi et Orbi blessing, where he quoted Augustine: 'With you I am a Christian, for you I am a Bishop.' This being with and being for is a tension. If one only wants to be for and forgets being in, then conflict arises." Koch stated that "there is no Synodality without Primacy, there is no Primacy without Synodality. I'm not entirely sure whether this is shared in Germany.
