Stop persecuting theologians!
Emeritus theologian from Tübingen, soon to be 75, calls for an end to the "persecution of theologians"
All these persecuted theologians have made good livings criticising the Catholic Church from tenured academic posts.
After the change in the chair of the Roman faith authority, the emeritus religious educator Albert Biesinger from Tübingen hopes for a change in the Vatican. He based this on the thinking of Argentine Archbishop Victor Manuel Fernandez, who will head the Faith Authority in future. He is to take up his new post in a few weeks. The Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith decides on doctrinal questions of the Catholic Church and is one of the most important authorities in the Vatican.
In an interview with the Catholic News Agency (KNA), Biesinger also called for an end to the "persecution of theologians". By this he means problems for scientists to obtain an ecclesiastical declaration of no objection before taking up a professorship.
Biesinger turns 75 on Tuesday and is considered one of the leading Catholic representatives of his field. He cites the question of the transmission of the Christian faith in families as well as religious and inter-religious education in day-care centres and schools as his two central research interests.
The author and editor of around 100 books also deals with the question of shaping religious communication from day-care centres to vocational schools. Biesinger's best-known work is called "Do not deceive children about God". Most of his research projects are or were both interdisciplinary and ecumenical.
Cathcon: I think among the theological "experts" who don't think children should go to confession at First Communion.
