There is a long tradition in Austria and Bavaria of "Bergmesse" - Mountain Masses celebrated either in the open air or in chapels. Every mountain in Austria has a Cross at the top which groups of the Faithful regarded as their goal. This is a picture of such a Mountain Mass, probably about 1890-1900.  

And this is what has become of the tradition.
