What will the Archbishop do next? Third meeting with the Pope

Archbishop Gänswein meets with Pope again

Archbishop Georg Gänswein has been received in audience by Pope Francis. In a press release, the German cleric was named as Prefect of the Papal Household and Titular Archbishop of Urbisaglia.

This was announced by the Vatican press office without further details. It is the third papal audience for Gänswein since the death of Benedict XVI, who died on the last day of 2022.

Gänswein has presented his book of recollections entitled "Nothing but the Truth" in several readings in German-speaking countries in recent weeks, most recently in Wiesbaden on Tuesday.

Pope decides on Gänswein's future path

In response to questions about his future career, Gänswein, who comes from the Archdiocese of Freiburg, said: "I am not the one who decides. I am the one who is decided upon." He merely makes suggestions to the Pope.

As private secretary, the 66-year-old served Benedict XVI (previously Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger), who died on New Year's Eve, for almost 20 years. In his memoir about these years, he describes the good cooperation, but also the occasional tensions between Benedict and his successor Francis.

Cathcon: Twitter has speculation that Bishop Bätzing, the Head of the German Bishops' Conference has blocked the return to Germany and maybe the Archbishop will become a director of one of the Marian shrines.....One Archbishop Gänswein is worth 10,000 Bishop Bätzings.  The latter is a completely devalued currency given how he and his predecessors have presided over the Church in Germany.
