Agony of French progressives at the thought of Cardinal Sarah as Papal Legate

Grand Pardon of Sainte-Anne-d’Auray. “Isn’t there a more legitimate Cardinal than Robert Sarah?”

No!

Readers’ letters. “Cardinal Robert Sarah will represent Pope Leo XIV in Sainte-Anne-d’Auray (Morbihan) on the 400th anniversary of an original event. Pope Francis must be turning in his grave!”

“How can Sarah, the “traditional,” represent this new pope, who is in line with Pope Francis’s ecclesiological beliefs?”

In our "Readers' Letters" section, Claude Bernard (Loire-Atlantique) reacts to the announced presence of Cardinal Sarah at the celebrations in Sainte-Anne-d'Auray (Morbihan) at the end of July:

"Pope Leo XIV has decided to appoint Guinean Cardinal Robert Sarah as a "special envoy" to preside over the celebrations of the Great Pardon in Sainte-Anne-d'Auray, on July 25 and 26, 2025. How can one not be disconcerted by such an initiative, even coming from our sympathetic Pope Leo XIV?" What image of the Church and its Pope Leo will this Cardinal, as described in the media, present?

"An emblematic figure of the ultra-conservative movement within the Catholic Church, Cardinal Robert Sarah embodies a rigorous vision of the faith that has earned him the support of the far-right," explains L'Humanité. "Thus, he considers that 'what Nazism and Communism were in the 20th century, Western homosexuality, abortion ideologies, and Islamic fanaticism are today.'"

[…] Unfortunately, Cardinal Sarah has re-surfaced, and in a big way, to represent Leo XIV at Sainte-Anne-d'Auray during the 400th anniversary of an original event. Pope Francis must be turning in his grave! Of all the cardinals he has created, could there not be a more legitimate legate?
