"A Pontificate like Bergoglio's was bound to leave a broken institution” Professor interviewed on CNN

“A Pontificate like Bergoglio's was bound to leave a broken institution” Loris Zanatta, historian and professor at the University of Bologna.  Cathcon: He is an expert on the history of Latin America.

Loris Zanatta, Italian historian, spoke with CNN Radio this Saturday about the impending conclave following the death of Pope Francis.

On "Ida y Vuelta con Laura Di Marco," he said: "It's very difficult, of course, to understand exactly what's happening, what could happen, right? But yes, the impression is that a pontificate like Bergoglio's was bound to leave a broken institution," he noted.

“This was already known, but with the pontiff's death, it was inevitable that this would begin to be seen, but we're only seeing a small piece, and, well, the big question is whether there will be continuity and what kind of continuity. Because he left a divided Church, right? Between conservatives and progressives,” he remarked.

Along these lines, he added: “Now, it was probably inevitable for a pontiff like Bergoglio, who had big plans. It always happens, it always has happened, that there are pontiffs who want to innovate, who more or less succeed. If we want to discuss it, we can talk about how effectively Francis managed to change,” he asserted.

“But Francis was, in his own way, a religious leader, wasn't he, to use a Latin American term? And religious leaders change a lot, and generally, the Church, which is a huge, great, two-thousand-year-old institution, with a very strong instinct for self-preservation, wouldn't surprise me if it chose a candidate who instead tries to smooth things over,” he noted.

The historian remarked: “Yes, there are a lot of names circulating. Generally, it's not good for names to circulate too much before the Conclave, right? Because it generally means they're burning out,” he added.

"But it's true, I did observe this, and it also has to do not only with Bergoglio's reform program, which was very ambitious, but with his governing style. He's been well known in Argentina, always, always, ever since he was a young provincial of the Jesuits. Always, when he governed the institutions, and he governed a lot in Argentina, he left institutions that were, well, essentially made up of those loyal to him," he concluded.
