Artwork featuring Trump on the Cross will now be on display starting All Saints' Day
After being initially canceled, the artwork will now be shown for All Saints' Day in Basel, Switzerland, which redefines the boundaries between holiness and sin. "Saint or Sinner" by Mason Storm depicts Donald Trump on the Cross.
An artwork depicting US President Donald Trump on the cross will be shown in Basel, Switzerland, despite ongoing criticism. The responsible gallery, Gleis 4 from Zug, announced this on Friday. The internationally discussed work, "Saint or Sinner," by Mason Storm, will be on display behind glass for two weeks starting November 1st in Basel's art district.
The sculpture by the British artist depicts Trump in an orange prison jumpsuit. He is strapped to a white cross, reminiscent of a gurney used in the US for lethal injection executions. The work was originally scheduled to be shown in September in the hall of the former brasserie in the west wing of the train station. After fierce criticism from the church and society, the plan was scrapped for security reasons.
A deliberately chosen timing
The gallery stated that the timing of the rescheduled exhibition was deliberate. All Saints' Day commemorates not only those officially canonized, but all people who have led exemplary lives. In this context, Storm's work radically poses the question of whether someone can be both a saint and a sinner. "And who has the right to judge?" By leaving the answer to these questions to the public, the artist places the viewer in the role of judge, savior, and witness. "Provocation here is not an end in itself, but a method of enlightenment," the gallery advertises the exhibition. The artwork is thus "a test of our own moral standards."
While Trump portrays himself as a peacemaker and is simultaneously accused of sexual misconduct and moral failings, the artwork is "more relevant than ever," the statement continues. It forces a decision and confronts the viewer with the question: "By what criteria do we judge?"
