A Mexican bishop is causing a stir at the Basilica of Guadalupe: He allowed an Anglican priestess to concelebrate the Eucharist at the major Marian shrine. He received criticism for this, but defended his decision.

Mexican Bishop Emeritus Raúl Vera López has rejected criticism for allowing an Anglican priest to participate as a concelebrant in a Eucharistic celebration at the Basilica of Guadalupe in Mexico City. "We no longer live in times of witch hunts and burning at the stake," he said, according to a report in the Catholic Herald on Thursday. The occasion was a service celebrated by the former bishop of Saltillo together with Anglican priestess Emilie Teresa Smith from Canada. The Mass was recorded and posted on the bishop's Facebook page.
The Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico City is the most visited Catholic pilgrimage site in the world, attracting millions of visitors annually. Many Catholics in Mexico reacted with outrage. The priest was said to have recited parts of the Eucharistic Prayer and the words of Consecration. Critics pointed out that concelebration with clergy from ecclesial communities not in full communion with Rome is not possible according to the "Directory for the Application of Principles and Norms on Ecumenism" published in 1993.
In this context, the bishop was accused of "heresy" and "indiscipline." However, he rejected the allegations, emphasizing that Rev. Smith has a long history of pastoral work and has experience as a parish priest and theologian. Supporters of the bishop argued that the emphasis was on solidarity, inclusion, and fraternity—and that this was also expressed during the Mass. Pope Leo XIV congratulated the Bishop in a letter in July on the 50th anniversary of his ordination, praising both his "fraternal charity" and his "passionate commitment" to social justice.

Background here. Any evil can be defended by using the Bishop's argument. It puts the morally wrong beyond criticism.
