Archbishop Gänswein meets the Pope

Another of those mistreated - another of many - by the merciful pontifical iron arm of the past twelve years is the former private secretary of Benedict XVI, Bishop Georg Gänswein, who was finally sent as Nuncio to Lithuania almost a year ago. He spent some 28 years of his life in the Vatican, most of them at the side of Cardinal Ratzinger, who later became Pope, and has now returned there in a new and relaxed mood on the occasion of the Jubilee of the papal representatives, received in audience by Leo XIV in the Vatican's Sala Clementina, Jun-10-2025, on which occasion he had the opportunity to greet the Pope in person. The meeting was brief, but Gänswein's satisfaction, expressed earlier in an interview in which he declared that the era of "arbitrariness" was over, was to be expected. During his stay in Rome, Gänswein took the opportunity to visit the tomb of Benedict XVI in the Vatican Grottoes, and was seen in St. Peter's Basilica cordially greeting the faithful and priests who recognised him as he passed by. It remains to be seen whether Leo will now take advantage of the experience he accumulated during his long stay in the Vatican and bring him back for a new assignment in the Curia.
