Protestants want another Francis
EPP appeals to Swiss Papal electors Cardinals Koch and Tscherrig
The Protestant People's Party of Switzerland has written an open letter to the Swiss cardinals Kurt Koch (75) and Emil Paul Tscherrig (78), who are participating in the Conclave. In it, the party expresses its hope that the successor to the late Pope Francis will continue his legacy.
The Conclave begins in Rome on Wednesday, bringing together cardinals who have not yet reached the age of 80. Among the papal electors are the Swiss cardinals Kurt Koch (75), President of the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity, and Emil Paul Tscherrig (78), a Valais native and former Vatican diplomat.
The Protestant People's Party of Switzerland (EPP) has written an open letter to the two cardinals, as it announced on Friday. In it, the Christian party, which holds two seats in the National Council, first pays tribute to the late Pope Francis.
A role model lost
With him, they say, they have lost a role model. "The way he always treated people with charity, he demonstrated what it means to emulate Jesus Christ," the party leadership states in its letter. Pope Francis was a man who, in a time of conflict, stood up for peace, reconciliation, and mercy.
The world still needs a Pope like Francis
The party believes that "the world still needs a Pope who exemplifies Christian charity for all of us, and especially for the powerful of this world, and who calls for peace, compassion, and justice once again."
Addressing Cardinals Koch and Tscherrig, it expresses the hope that "in the future, a person will hold this high office who will carry Christian values to the outside world, as Pope Francis was able to do."
