Modernist meltdown begins in Germany as Catholic Youth Association President resigns and renounces priesthood
Cathcon: This is the direct consequence of Francis raising entirely false expectations in the German Church. The synodalists were forever threatening to leave if they did not get their way, now one has followed through with many more to follow.
A good example is Gregor Podschun, Federal Chairman of the Catholic Youth Association. He is in a perpetual state of having had enough.
When they are mostly gone, the traditionalists will pick up the pieces of a much reduced German Church.

BDKJ Federal President resigns and renounces priesthood
Essen – He no longer feels he has the right place as a priest in the Church – this is what youth pastor and spiritual director of the BDKJ youth association, Stefan Ottersbach, wrote to his colleagues. Starting in June, he will be pursuing new paths.
The priest and former Federal President of the Catholic Youth Association BDKJ, Stefan Ottersbach, is resigning from his positions. In a letter to the delegates of the general assembly of the Federation of German Catholic Youth (BDKJ), he announced his renunciation of the priesthood as well as his withdrawal from the spiritual leadership of the umbrella organization of youth associations. The letter was obtained by the Catholic News Agency (KNA).
"Personally, I no longer feel in the right place as a priest in this church," Ottersbach wrote in the letter to the delegates, dated Easter. His decision had many facets. Starting in June, he will no longer serve as a diocesan priest in the Diocese of Essen and will no longer perform any duties within the BDKJ (German Catholic Youth Association). He left open his future plans. "I can't give you an answer to this question today because I don't know it myself yet," Ottersbach said.
Ordained a priest in 2002
The 49-year-old had been a full-time president since 2020 and thus a member of the federal board of the BDKJ (German Catholic Youth Association). The Duisburg native was ordained a priest in Essen in 2002. Among other roles, he served as diocesan youth pastor in the Diocese of Essen and rector of the Sankt Altfrid youth education center in Essen.
The BDKJ is the umbrella organization of 17 Catholic youth organizations that brings the interests of children and young people into internal church and political debates.
