Feast of the Patronage of St Thomas Aquinas over Catholic schools

Today, we celebrate the Patronage of Saint Thomas Aquinas over Catholic Schools.

Since the time of his canonization, St. Thomas Aquinas was invoked by Catholic educators by virtue of his intellect and wonder for both the physical and spiritual realms. Since we administrators are from a Dominican university that is named for and under the patronage of St. Thomas Aquinas, this feast day is extra significant for us.

Catholic universities are expected to be vanguards of sound theology, whose students are missioned to imbibe the Faith by learning and acting according to the premise of the Gospel. The life of St. Thomas Aquinas is a testament to that mission. He was determined to learn more about the world for he knew that it holds mysteries which only the divine can imprint. He refused to listen to those who doubted him and instead sought after God Whom He believed is greater than everything he had studied and hoped for. Because of how he used learning to grow closer to God, Pope Leo XIII declared him as the patron of all Catholic schools.

This special feast used to be celebrated by the Order of Preachers on the 2nd Sunday of November until 1924, when it was fixed on 13 November. Mass was said as at the Feast of Saint Thomas with minimal variations. Unfortunately, it was abolished in the 1962 liturgy.

Nowadays, a good number of Catholic schools have fallen astray from sound doctrine. Through the intercession of St. Thomas, may all schools never waver from their mission to form young men and women who are devoted to the service of the Church.

Invocation to St. Thomas Aquinas before Lecture or Study:
"O Blessed Thomas, patron of schools, obtain for us from God an invincible faith, burning charity, a chaste life, and true knowledge, through Christ our Lord. Amen."

This Day, the Thirteenth Day of November

Patronage of St. Thomas Aquinas over Catholic Schools. A totum duplex feast of the first class. 
St. Didacus, confessor, of the Order of Friars Minor, whose birthday is observed on November 12. 
At Ravenna, the birthday of the holy martyrs, Valentine, Solutor, and Victor, who suffered in the reign of the Emperor Diocletian. 
At Aix in the province of Narbonne, Blessed Mitrius, a most famous martyr. 
At Caesarea in Palestine, the suffering of St. Antoninus, Zebina, Germanus, and Ennatha, virgin. 
At the time of Galerius Maximus, Ennatha was scourged and then burned alive; the others were beheaded because they had fearlessly and loudly accused the governor Firmilian of idolatry in offering sacrifice to the gods. 
In Africa, the holy Spanish martyrs Arcadius, Paschasius, Probus, and Eutychian. In the Vandal persecution, they refused positively to join the Arian heresy. They were first proscribed by the Arian king Genseric, and then exiled. They were treated with atrocious cruelty and finally put to death in various ways. At that time, too, was seen the constancy of Paulillus, the little brother of Ss. Paschasius and Eutychian. Since all efforts failed to turn him away from the Catholic faith, he was subjected to a long clubbing and then condemned to the vilest slavery

At Tours in Gaul, St. Britius, bishop, who was a disciple of Blessed Bishop Martin. His memory is recalled on November 14. 
At Toledo in Spain, St. Eugene, bishop. In Auvergne in Gaul, St. Quinctian, bishop. 
At Cremona in Insubria, St. Homobono, confessor. He was renowned for miracles and was canonized by Pope Innocent III.

November is the Month of the Poor Souls in Purgatory


Three Thousand Days of Indulgences for the relief of the “Poor Souls” in Purgatory to be obtained by saying the following ejaculations (Part 1/4):

1. The sign of the Cross.

(50 days each time. Plus IX., July 28, 1863.)

2. The sign of the Cross if made with holy water.

(100 days each time. Pius IX., March 23, 1866.)

3. May the Heart of Jesus be loved everywhere.

(100 days once a day, Pius IX., Pr. Ma., Sept. 23, 1860.)

4. Praised be Jesus Christ forevermore.

(50 days each time. Clement XIII., Sept. 5, 1759.)

5. Jesus, meek and humble of heart, make my heart unto Thine.

The Joyful Mysteries of the Rosary are prayed on Monday

CHAPTER 35:  THE WEEKLY KITCHEN SERVERS
12 An hour before the meal the weekly servers are to receive, over and above the usual allowance, a drink and a piece of bread, 
13 so that at meal time they may serve the brothers without murmuring or oppressive exertion.  14 On solemn days, however, they are to wait until after the dismissal. 
15 On Sunday as soon as Lauds has ended, both those beginning and those completing their week shall bow before the knees of all, asking for their prayers.  
16 The one ending his week is to say this verse:  Blessed are you, Lord God, who have helped me and consoled me (Dan 3:52; Ps 86:17); 
17 and having said this three times, the one ending his service is to receive the blessing.  The one beginning his service then continues, saying:  O God, come to my assistance; O Lord, make haste to help me (Ps 70:2), 
18 and when this has been repeated three times by all, and having then received the blessing, he is to begin his service.
