Study: Trier priest fled prosecution to Paraguay

A Catholic priest from the diocese of Trier fled to Paraguay in the early 1960s, according to a new study.

The clergyman had evaded prosecution in Germany for sexual abuse. He was accused of moral crimes against pupils. These allegedly took place between Easter 1958 and December 1959.

Ascended to be Vicar General despite known accusations

Although the bishop in Paraguay was aware of the accusations, he allegedly appointed the priest as his Vicar General. The priest died in 1997.

His case is one of several in a study now available commissioned by the German Bishops' Conference. The study examines files of the Co-ordination Office, Fidei Donum for indications of sexual abuse and cover-ups. About 400 priests went to Latin America through Fidei Donum.
