Papal election may be brought forward
The choice of a successor to Pope Benedict XVI. could possibly be brought forward, according to Vatican spokesman Federico Lombardi. The official rules foresee a delay of between 15 and 20 days after the beginning of the interregnum to allow all the Cardinals to make the journey. "But if they are all meeting together, it is also possible to bring it forward," admitted Lombard.
It must be checked whether under the current rules - which themselves cannot be changed – this interpretation is possible, according to Lombardi. Such considerations must be studied by the Apostolic Camera, who during the interregnum in the office, coordinates the ongoing business of the church and the preparation for the conclave. The Apostolic Chamberlain ("Camerlengo") is currently tbe Secretary of State Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone.
Pope transfers for two months to Castel Gandolfo
Furthermore, Lombardi said that the Pope after his departure on February 28 for two months - would be retiring to Castel Gandolfo – the expectation being "until end of April". It is "unlikely" that Benedict XVI would appear in public during the time of the papal election, or as his successor enters office.
In the papal summer residence, Benedict XVI would use the apartments which he had also once inhabited, the spokesman said. At times, there has been speculation that Benedict XVI would use the Palazzo Barberini within the estate in Castel Gandolfo. The permanent retirement home of the former Pope will be the monastery "Mater Ecclesiae" in the Vatican Gardens. The complex will be rebuilt just for his needs.
