French-speaking breakaway? Umm, the university was French and Dutch speaking (beginning with Msgr Ladeuze's reforms) until the rising tide of Flemish nationalism pushed the francophones out of the town. Working out who was "the breakaway" has all the fun and clarity of working out which unfaithful, lapsed spouse is reponsible for a divorce!
