What is it? IV
I receive an e-mail pointing out the similarity between the cross of Cardinal Danneels and the Crux Dissimulata
"An ancient swastika which symbolized the four winds or directions and their corresponding spirits. It was also a "fire and sun symbol occurring initially in Asia and later among the Germanic tribes," according to The Herder Symbol Dictionary. "The cross inscribed in a circle mediates between the square and the circle," emphasizing the "joining of heaven and earth.... and "the perfected human being."
Has all the components, but arranged in slightly different way. Cardinal Danneels did say his aim was not to sanctify but humanise the city. Perfectly humanised!
However, the name Crux Dissimulata (disguised cross) stems from the early Christian world.
"The intention was that no non-Christian would recognize the crux dissimulata as a Christian rallying symbol and object of worship."
A bitter irony for an evangelisation conference in the modern world. This movement to go back to the early Church does have its drawbacks.
