March 31st is World Transparency Day. The Catholic transwoman Rebecca Burkhardt* reveals why the church should be interested in this date and how it can address trans people (previously known as Basil and formerly President of the Catholic Synod in Basel).

“If a church really wants to be there for the people, it has to move. And if you want to be there for people, you can't just ignore a part of humanity. Only through visibility can the general public be reminded that we also exist.

"The Church must be accessible to all."

The most important condition for a more open church is that the problem is recognized as such and that a positive solution is to be found. The Church must be accessible to all. Services and sacraments may no longer be withheld from certain people. In addition, special events are also useful and necessary, such as those offered by the Open Church Elisabethen in Basel.

However, a day like March 31 cannot be a single flash of light, but should be an impetus for all those who are interested in the problem in a positive sense to actually be there and possibly give the quantum of courage that may be necessary . Only visibility will remind all the forgetful of reality. And only visibility allows us to have our place in society. And that is why the Church should be interested in this day. In order not to get stuck in the dust of the centuries."

The Open Church Elisabethen is a city church for Basel and the region. Since 1994 we organize spiritual, cultural and social services and events for all people, regardless of their origin, skin colour, sexual orientation or religion.
