You know a lot of us associate the previous cross with our late Great John Paul II - I chose to purchase a small copy to afix to a wooden bead rosary that goes with me everywhere. We don't see it as "ugly and modern".
I applaud the liturgical sensibilities and renewal of B16 - a man with tastes like unto my own! But there is, however, NO NEED to cast aspersions on all that was as we celebrate what is.
I like the "new" old cross just fine. The old one wasn't junk though. NO NEED to talk about it like that.
I also disagree about calling Pope John Paul IIs crucifix ugly. Ive read the design dates back to at least Pope Paul VI if not more, so how modern is it really?
For those of us who grew up only knowing Pope John Paul II as our pope until his death his crucifix is a very important part of his image. While the crucifix may not be to everyones liking to call it ugly is sort of like someone calling your beloved grandfather`s ever present sweater or glasses ugly.

Ugly is such an ugly word
