Pope displays ultra-modernist Cross

Pope Francis Holds A Cross During A Meeting With Cardinals

Abstracted image, abstract faith.  It is impossible to preach the Cross and Him Crucified and convert anyone using such a Cross.

More recently, the Pope has taken to carrying a new Ferula.

The type of image on the ferula is symptomatic of the Paschal Mystery theology of Odo Casel, which believes that Redemption was not wrought on the Cross but during the whole Pascal Mystery (analogous to the whole canon being consecratory rather than the words of consecration). Pascal Mystery theology itself was derived from his belief, for anti-semitic reasons, that the liturgy does not derive from the Temple sacrifice but from Greek myth. These crosses became popular in the 70s and were approved by Rome providing they had wounds. This one does not- which can so easily lead to a fideism detached from history.

"One would be straying from the straight path were he to wish the altar restored to its primitive table form; were he to want black excluded as a color for the liturgical vestments; were he to forbid the use of sacred images and statues in Churches; were he to order the crucifix so designed that the divine Redeemer's body shows no trace of His cruel sufferings..."

- Pope Pius XII, Mediator Dei § 62

Vatican consultation softening up the Church for change?

Reactions

"The Vatican has asked national bishops' conferences around the world to conduct a wide-ranging poll of Catholics asking for their opinions on church teachings on contraception, same-sex marriage and divorce.

Archbishop Lorenzo Baldisseri, secretary general of the Vatican's Synod of Bishops, asked the conferences to distribute the poll "immediately as widely as possible to deaneries and parishes so that input from local sources can be received."

The poll, which comes in a questionnaire sent to national bishops' conferences globally in preparation for a Vatican synod on the family next October, is the first time the church's central hierarchy has asked for such input from grass-roots Catholics since at least the establishment of the synod system following the Second Vatican Council."

Full story

Cathcon- the church is not a democracy.   Moral truth, derived from universal and natural law is not susceptible to democratic vote.  If the Pope turns the Church into a consultative democracy, he will open the way to his own deposition by the forces which he unleashes.

For the last fifty years, the deficiencies of the teaching office of the church is matters of faith and morals only means that this consultation will produce one long scream to adapt to the ways of the modern world.

Rather, in the words of G.K.Chesterton,

“Tradition means giving votes to the most obscure of all classes, our ancestors. It is the democracy of the dead. Tradition refuses to submit to the small and arrogant oligarchy of those who merely happen to be walking about.”
