How the new Cardinals preach and/or celebrate Mass

All there apart from Cardinal Felix. Cardinal Capovilla is represented by a 1969 interview. He was Secretary to Pope John XXIII. His rise has been slow.....and he receives the red hat now as a homage of Pope Francis to Pope John XXIII, who called the Second Vatican Council.

Vatican denies female cardinals on the horizon

Reactions
The Vatican has denied speculation that at the Consistory next 22 February, a woman could be elevated to the cardinalate. Vatican spokesman, Father Federico Lombardi dismissed reports in the international press with regard to this matter:

"This is an absurdity," he commented on the issue, according to agency APIC.

The British newspaper "The Sunday Times" had suggested in its Sunday edition that the Irish theologian Linda Hogan was a possible candidate for the Cardinal office. Canon law (Canon 351) requires that to be chosen a cardinal, the person must be at least a priest, and on elevation must be made a bishop, if not already a bishop.

The occasion of speculation about female cardinals was Pope Francis' remarks about women in the church: the Pope had shown himself open to women in leadership positions within the Catholic Church. He had not spoken about anything relating to the cardinalate in this context. On the other hand, the Pope rejected the idea of female priests: This question has already been conclusively dealt with under Pope John Paul II, according to Francis.

All Cardinal Electors apart from Cardinal O'Brien, who has absented himself in scandal.  The others have no excuse for not celebrating the Extraordinary Form after the Motu Proprio.   While not celebrating Cardinal Ouellet and Cardinal Dolan have properly implemented the Pope's document.

The failure of the Pope Emeritus to celebrate publically the Latin Mass, which he did as a Cardinal, is more unfinished business of the last Papacy.

Cardinal Barbarin has celebrated the Latin Mass but at the same time joins in prayer with Muslims.  He is perhaps the ultimate in liberal Cardinals.

American cardinals cancel their regular press conference

Reactions
he American cardinals have suspended their news conferences in Rome before the conclave which were started a few days ago. The meeting scheduled for Wednesday meeting with media representatives was canceled. According to the U.S. Conference of Bishops, the Cardinals were responding to a request of the College of Cardinals, meeting today in Rome to discuss the situation of the Catholic Church and to prepare the election of a pope. The College of Cardinals have therefore highlighted the confidentiality of the discussions.

The Vatican declined to comment on the decision. His spokesman Federico Lombardi noted, however, that no such cardinals from other countries were holding press conferences. He also stressed that the confidentiality of the general congregations was guarantor of the freedom of the voters for the Papal office.

Two American cardinals each time on Monday and Tuesday in the North American College priest held under huge media attention a press conference. They stated here that they were opposed to an early date of the conclave. They would have only then a more thorough picture of the state of the Church and the Roman Curia and have got to know the other cardinals better, was the reasoning. In total there are 19 American cardinals, eleven of them are eligible to vote.

Leading Cardinal warns against Church becoming more progressive

Reactions
Swiss Cardinal Georges Cottier (93) refuses to open up the Church, leading to the adaptation to the modern world. In an interview with the Ticino newspaper "Corriere del Ticino" on Tuesday the former theologian of the Papal Household warned of a more "open" Church, if this means that the Church bows to the "will of the world".

Then the church stands before the decision between "compromise" and "mediocrity". An "openess" could include many requests and concepts that are not all compatible. Theologically, the Church has been "open" on the basis of Her vocation. And this is to the message of Jesus, says the Dominican native of Geneva.

The church is also "Catholic" by was open to all the world. For living in the Vatican cardinal, the church must "missionary" and his stay. Cardinal Cottier, due to the age limit does not participate in the election of the new Pope.

Cardinal in interview- Conclave is like a visit to the dentist- clearly the shorter and more painless the better

Reactions
He is one of six German cardinals who in the next few days elect the new Pope in Rome. In an interview with BILD.de Cardinal Paul Josef Cordes (78), says how he responded to the resignation of his friend Pope Benedict XVI and how he sees the conclave.

BILD: Your Eminence, when was your last meeting with Pope Benedict?
Cardinal Paul Josef Cordes: At the farewell to the cardinals in the Clementine Hall, shortly before his departure last Thursday and it was my turn. The Pope asked me spontaneously and easily: How do you do? And I replied: Apart from your resignation - well, Holy Father.

BILD: Did you want to make a joke?
Cordes: The withdrawal of this great Pontiff left not only in me, but in very many believers a painful void.

BILD: Will you meet Pope Benedict again?
Cordes: I've also asked him if I can. And he gave his consent.

BILD: Not long ago you were a guest of Pope Benedict ...
Cordes: In early February I had eaten dinner with the Holy Father and Georg Gänswein in the papal apartment. First, there was pasta. Then roast pork with green beans. And of course, dessert. In the end, the Pope served a very old sherry.

BILD: How did you get the invitation?
Cordes: Gänswein had told the Pope that my new book "Preserving Evidence - mystics witness to God" now had been printed. I had dedicated ot to the Pope. He apparently wanted to read it. Then came the invitation, and I could present the Holy Father with a copy.

BILD: What impression did you have of the Pope? Was he weakened?
Cordes: He was mentally very active. But he did not have the former great vitality, which I knew he had once.

BILD: Did his resignation come as a surprise?
Cordes: It came to me, as for all the other cardinals as well, like a bolt from the blue. We were in shock, when he told us at the meeting.

BILD: Can you remember your first ever meeting with Ratzinger?
Cordes: Probably not in as much detail as Benedict, who has a fantastic memory. It was in 1969 at the seminary in Paderborn. Hans Küng had then built an elaborate house in Tübingen. The money was coming from the sale of his books. I asked Ratzinger whether with books it was ever possible to make money. He said yes, as he himself also wrote books.

BILD: Do you look forward to the conclave and the election of a pope?
Cordes: Yes. It will hopefully be a short conclave and pretty soon. I want to compare the time with the visit to the dentist, as you want get everything over with as quickly as possible. Also, I do not know what exactly to expect. I know about what happens in a conclave from mediocre films. We will see.

BILD: What do you think of the proposal of Cardinal Kasper, that the Pope in governing the Church, should appoint an additional panel of bishops and laymen ?
Cordes: The Pope can create this, if he wants. But there are likely enough committees . Our most important task is the deepening of faith. Benedict has always pointed again to God . The forgetfulness of God is the problem of our time.

BILD: Which candidate would be the best for us Germans?
Cordes: If a candidate engineered his own election, he would have failed me. A pope is not just there for Germany . He's a good pope when he awakens hope and consolation, because he proclains salvation of God for us all- especially for the disenfranchised and oppressed.

BILD: Should the successor continue Benedict's policy of "detachment from the world by the church"?
Cordes: The initial rejection of many was emotional and ill-conceived. In the Freiburg speech great wisdom can be found. It is - well beyond Germany - a weighty push bacj against life without God

Cardinal: "Vatileaks" is not a central theme of the conclave

Reactions
More clarity in the "Vatileaks" affair is important according to the viewpoint of the Colombian Cardinal Ruben Salazar Gomez, but this document theft is not the most important issue for the conclave and for the future of the Church. So far there is no fixed list of priorities and criteria for the General Congregation meeting on Monday, the Cardinal told "Corriere della Sera" (Sunday edition). A central concern, however, is the new evangelization, the spread and deepening of faith among cultures, Cardinal Salazar said.

Conclave- five of our cardinals are missing.

Reactions
The Holy See Press Office confirmed today that, of the 115 Cardinal-Electors who will come to the Conclave, 5 have still not arrived to take part at the General Congregations: Cardinal Lehmann (Mainz), Cardinal Naguib (Alexandria Patriarch Emeritus), Cardinal Nycz (Warsaw), Cardinal Pham Minh Mân (Vietnam), Cardinal Tong Hon (Hong Kong).

Full story
Someone should tell Cardinal Lehmann it is Lent- no more carnival. He was never late for carnival. Just as long his fellow actor, the Devil, stays away.

Cardinal Naguib is not well and is making heroic efforts to attend.

Cardinal Nycz wanted to be present at Mass of thanksgiving of the Polish Episcopate for the pontificate of Benedict XVI and the intentions of the new Pope, which will be on Tuesday night be celebrated in the Cathedral of Warsaw. After the Eucharist, Cardinal Nycz will go in the evening to Rome. Source

Cardinal Tong Hon is a busy man by all accounts, which was the reason he did not say goodbye to Pope Benedict. Hope he has booked his tickets by now.

More Cardinals demand more information about Vatileaks dossier

Reactions
The "Vatileaks" affair should be one of the themes in the General Congregations prior to the conclave by the will of of several cardinals. "If we want to make a good decision, we certainly need to have more information about it" the South African Cardinal Wilfrid Napier was quoted in the media on Monday. His French colleague Philippe Barbarin said: "We want to know what has happened in the Vatican which has so shaken it in the last few years." Even U.S. cardinals urged more information on the affair last year of the stolen and published Vatican secret documents. The Archbishop of Chicago, Cardinal Francis Eugene George, made it clear at a press conference in Rome that they wanted to ask the "relevant cardinals" some questions on the subject. Washington Archbishop Donald William Wuerl also concurred on this. Emeritus Pope Benedict XVI ordered just before leaving office that a report on "Vatileaks", which the Cardinal's commision submitted after months of investigation, should remain under seal and shall be accessible only to his successor. About the content, there had been rumors in the Italian press that it discussed intrigue and cliques in the Curia.

Media ban reimposed on Archbishop dismissed by Vatican in mysterious circumstances

Reactions
A day before the resignation of the Pope, the prefect of the Vatican's Congregation for Bishops, Cardinal Marc Ouellet, imposed a media ban on the popular Slovak ex-Archbishop Robert Bezak. Bezak, who was dismissed in June 2012 under still unexplained circumstances from the leadership of the Archdiocese of Trnava, should cease giving any statements to the media, including spiritual speeches, as Slovak media reported on Tuesday. Bezak has to stop hosting his religious TV program which he started doing two weeks ago.

The requirement of Cardinal Ouellets was given to Bezak who is a member of the Redemptorists, at a meeting with the Superior General of his Order, Father Michael Brehl, in Rome. Cardinal Ouellet comes from Canada like the Superior General Brehl .

In a statement for the Slovak news agency TASR, Bezak asked the media to "respect" his situation. He thanked all those who had been offered to him "goodwill, sympathy, help and support", staying united with them in prayer and including them in his "spiritual requests".

By 26 June 2012, the Apostolic Nuncio in the Slovak Republic, Archbishop Mario Giordana, via decision at the same time as dismissing Bezak, imposed a ban on residence in his diocese as well as a strict prohibition of contact with the media. The Archbishop had previously refused to resign on the grounds that the reasons for this request are not known. Then he was informed of his dismissal. That he announced his dismissal in July 2012 during a Mass, he justified with the fact that his words were relevant to the faithful, and not to the media.

After isolated short statements that were partially circulated by people close to him, Bezak broke the silence imposed on him in December 2012 with a massive number of short consecutive major television appearances, which put his case back on the table. On the first Sunday of Lent (February 17) finally, for the private television station TA3 Bezak presented the first series of meditations for the new broadcast format "word in time", with which he wanted to guide viewers towards Easter.

Vatican's chief investigator of sexual abuse cases defends Cardinal Mahony

Reactions
The ex- Vatican prosecutor of the abuse cases tellsTgcom 24: "We are more aware than ever before. The hard line? That was decided by Ratzinger "

Cardinal Roger Mahony "again and again was asking advice on how to do well", said Msgr. Charles J. Scicluna, a former Promoter of Justice of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, interviewed by Tgcom24 for L'intervista della domenica-The interview on Sunday, by Alessandro Banfi, on the case of the former Cardinal Archbishop of Los Angeles accused of covering up cases of pedophilia. "It's easy for us to judge the decisions of those who I call the poor bishop that had to handle these cases 30 years ago. Of course, these cardinals in the conclave will have a greater awareness. "

Compared to the past "we are now more aware," "you make more laws to reply to certain phenomena," says Scicluna, by “which the criteria used today to judge these cases, shows in the past the right things were not done. Of course, these cardinals in the conclave have a great awareness. They can share their suffering but also what they have learned: their determination to do better and the need in the Church to do well, because this is a battle we cannot lose. "

Regarding the case of Cardinal Keith O'Brien, hit by allegations of "inappropriate behavior" towards some priests, who has announced that he will not participate in the conclave, "we respect his decision. I have already said that the Holy Spirit at the time of the conclave will speak to the hearts of all, "says Scicluna.

As for Pope Benedict, Scicluna said: "Ratzinger, in this modern era, faced with the beginning of this new wave of scandals took the decision to act. He had already met with victims on paper, reading what they had suffered. Then he wanted to be a shepherd near these wounded people. I think this is an act of great spiritual fatherhood, compassion and courage. "

"The greatest defense we can make - he added - is to assure people that we will not hide anything under the carpet, we have the courage to deal with sin where it is and to clean up where we can because we can do so '..

Brazilian Cardinals demand access to the Vatileaks dossier before the Conclave begins

Reactions
The Cardinal Dom Geraldo Majella Agnelo, one of five Brazilians who will participate in the conclave, said yesterday that he will seek access to the secret report delivered to Pope Benedict containing information about scandals in the church.

This week, the Holy See said the dossier on the so-called Vatileaks case, compiled by three cardinals at the request of the pope now emeritus, will only be known to the new pontiff.

Dom Geraldo, retired archbishop of Salvador, said he was against secrecy and argued that the conclusions of the report should be given to all 115 voting cardinals before the Conclave.

"I think it should be, if we have a large file, as reported. Which can be done by the three cardinals before the conclave," he argued. "If there was a Commission and they had an opinion, we want to know."

According to Italian magazine "Panorama" and the newspaper "La Repubblica", the dossier describes a network of corruption and homosexual prostitution in the Holy See and this was instrumental in the abdication of the Pope.

The Vatican confirmed the existence of the report, but declined to release it to the press.

Cardinal Dom Raymundo Damasceno Assis, CNBB (Brazilian Bishops Conference) President and member of the conclave, told Folha that he expected to receive at least a summary of the text before voting. "The Cardinals should be aware of what is needed for the future."

"The important thing is to have a sense of what is fundamental in this document. Meanwhile, I'm just reading the newspapers."

Cardinal Scherer
Constantly cited among the likely replacements Pope Benedict Archbishop of São Paulo, Dom Odilo Scherer, said it is "fantasy" to think that there are already candidates for Pope but rather that specific ideas could only start with meetings between the Cardinals.

"To saying that, before the conclave, the candidates are already ready, is part of the fantasy - that we understand very well, but is not the reality of significance, going forward with the work of the College of Cardinals," he told Radio Vatican.

"In a few days, the cardinals will begin to meet (...) in a great awareness of the situation of the church." "Of course, in the midst of all these considerations, we will be also putting a profile to the one who should assume the role of Peter's successor."

Dom Geraldo said he had five possible candidates in mind and that the Conclave, scheduled for early March, will begin with no favorites. "Now we have no one that stands out. They are all more or less at the same level."

Cardinal Schönborn's manifesto for the Papacy

Reactions
The Church that Austrian Catholics had become accustomed to is “a thing of the past.”

“The time has come to face the changes that have taken place in society in a far more serious way than we have up until now.”

Schonborn's new statements point to the same goals Ratzinger set out 42 years ago

Vatican II had already provided the impetus for inserting the Church in a free society, but an enormous amount of work still needs to be done, which will change the nature of the Church.

“Today we live in a culture of freedom, and this is a very good thing since it is when we are free that we are most like God.” (Cathcon- the Cardinal has been reading too much Hegel rather than Aquinas)

“Freedom is the best starting point for the convincing, believing and fortifying Church of the future - which will look quite different from the Church we have known up to now.”

In a free society with its manifold possibilities, the Church will be just one player among many others (Cathcon !!!!!!!!!-  if this holds for society, will certainly hold for individuals- the death of spirituality!).

Parishes will be larger and “slimmer” in structure.

“Do not think that this [new departure] is a trivial matter for me as a Bishop responsible for it. It means saying goodbye to the Church of my childhood … But reality leaves us no other choice.”

More here

And lest we forget- how Cardinal Schönborn says Mass- the now famous Balloon Mass.

Election posters for Cardinal Turkson in Rome

Reactions
The Italian election campaign is not known for its sophisticated aesthetic. But that obviously does not put off the art group Zero Zero Kappa Kappa. With a variety of posters, they brought the Romans on Friday near matters that usually take place strictly shielded from the public behind closed doors: The election campaign for the Papacy in the Vatican .

The posters put up show Prelate Peter Turkson from Ghana, who is regarded as a promising candidate. "When you vote in the conclave Peter Kodwo Appiah Turkson" is shown on the posters. Under a photo of Turkson, there is, in the style of the Italian election campaign, a papal symbol marked with an election cross. Zero Zero Kappa Kappa is known for actions of this kind. The Romans remember well the traffic signs with a warning against tear gas.

The conclave to elect a new head of the Catholic Church comes after the resignation of Benedict XVI from the Papacy altogether. Turkson is the president of the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace at the Vatican. He is considered a conservative church leaders.
