Pope Benedict universally disliked by liberal and ex-Catholics.

“I am so .... out. I had gotten all excited about Catholicism again. I just loved all the people and ceremony of the last few weeks, all the hundreds of thousands in the square. I was out to lunch when I heard, 'It's the German.' You could just feel everyone groan.” Dominick Dunne

Famously the Rome correspondent of The Tablet spontaneously burst into tears on hearing of the election.

Oh yes, "everyone groaned". Everyone meaning all those who want the Church to be Episcopalianism v. 2.0. The rest of us were quite pleased.

Personally, I disturbed the peace of a quiet Brussels street when I heard with cries of joy!

Te Deum!

The article is pretty much the typical blah blah garbage, I agree, however, in this particular remark: "Liberal Catholicism and liberal Islam have one thing in common: they have a very poor track record of attracting followers".
