The betrayal of loyal Catholics

Reactions
from Holy Smoke

Next Sunday, a thriving little Catholic church in Yorkshire mining country which just happens to offer the traditional Latin Mass will be shut by the Bishop of Leeds, Arthur Roche (who, I learn, is a patron of an organisation called STOP - Start Treating Others Positively).

After I posted about this yesterday, parishioners of St John the Evangelist, Allerton Bywater, have contacted me with heartbreaking messages of support for their priest and their church. The more I learn, the more cruel the decision of the diocese appears.

Denver Archbishop Recalls "Progressive" Nuns

Reactions

to Obedience to the Church:

"At a meeting of leaders of US Catholic religious orders, Denver's Archbishop Chaput has urged members to return to the principle of 'holy obedience' to the teaching and authority of the Church. The meeting, held this year in Denver, was for the Leadership Conference of Women Religious (LCWR), a group notorious among faithful Catholics for their disregard for Catholic teaching on moral and doctrinal issues, especially sexual morality.

Citing the example of saints and founders of religious orders, Archbishop Chaput called obedience the 'yardstick of love,' especially for people who have taken the three religious vows of poverty, chastity and obedience."

The suppression of a Latin-loving parish

Reactions
from Holy Smoke

"One hundred parishioners of St John the Evangelist, Allerton Bywater, have petitioned their bishop, the Rt Rev Arthur Roche, to allow the parish to celebrate Mass only in Latin, in both the old and new forms. Instead, he is closing the church this month and has told the parish priest, Fr Mark Lawler, that he will not be appointed to a new parish because his ministry is 'divisive'."

Feast of the Transfiguration

Reactions

The Transfiguration of Christ is the culminating point of His public life, as His Baptism is its starting point, and His Ascension its end. Moreover, this glorious event has been related in detail by St. Matthew (17:1-6), St. Mark (9:1-8), and St. Luke (9:28-36), while St. Peter (2 Peter 1:16-18) and St. John (1:14), two of the privileged witnesses, make allusion to it.

About a week after His sojourn in Cæsarea Philippi, Jesus took with him Peter and James and John and led them to a high mountain apart, where He was transfigured before their ravished eyes. St. Matthew and St. Mark express this phenomenon by the word metemorphothe, which the Vulgate renders transfiguratus est. The Synoptics explain the true meaning of the word by adding "his face did shine as the sun: and his garments became white as snow," according to the Vulgate, or "as light," according to the Greek text.

This dazzling brightness which emanated from His whole Body was produced by an interior shining of His Divinity. False Judaism had rejected the Messias, and now true Judaism, represented by Moses and Elias, the Law and the Prophets, recognized and adored Him, while for the second time God the Father proclaimed Him His only-begotten and well-loved Son. By this glorious manifestation the Divine Master, who had just foretold His Passion to the Apostles (Matthew 16:21), and who spoke with Moses and Elias of the trials which awaited Him at Jerusalem, strengthened the faith of his three friends and prepared them for the terrible struggle of which they were to be witnesses in Gethsemani, by giving them a foretaste of the glory and heavenly delights to which we attain by suffering.

Feast of St Dominic

Reactions

At Bologna, our most holy Father St. Dominic, confessor and founder of the Order of Friars Preachers. He was most illustrious, being distinguished by nobility of birth, sanctity and learning. Until death he proserved without stain his virginity and by the singular grace of his merits he raised three persons from the dead. By his preaching he curbed heresies and established many persons in a religious and godly manner of life.
On August 6, his soul soared to heaven, there to receive a reward commensurate with his extraordinary works. His feast, however, is celebrated on this day, by an ordinance of Pope Paul IV. A totum duplex feast of the first class with a solemn octave.

In the good old days, one could look down the street to see the Church of St Josse, but looking up the street, the sight of one of the finest Churches in Brussels was blocked by the construction of Directorate General Development. The power line across the street can be seen in both photos.

1 Corinthians 1
21 For seeing that in the wisdom of God the world, by wisdom, knew not God, it pleased God, by the foolishness of our preaching, to save them that believe.
22 For both the Jews require signs, and the Greeks seek after wisdom:
23 But we preach Christ crucified, unto the Jews indeed a stumblingblock, and unto the Gentiles foolishness:
24 But unto them that are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God, and the wisdom of God.
25 For the foolishness of God is wiser than men; and the weakness of God is stronger than men.
