now to be converted into a hotel and conference centre - when the Franciscans give up a Church in one of the most deprived areas of Manchester, there is something seriously wrong. Historically, the Franciscans always made new foundations in the poorest part of any city, not least among them, Santa Croce in Florence.
The comparison with a Catholic Church and the Taj Mahal is not mine but the new owners of the Church of St Francis.
St Francis and all saints of the Franciscan Order pray for us! Remember the faithful of Gorton, now and in the past, who have been deserted by the Church.

"I am worried by the Blessed Virgin's messages to Lucy at Fatima. This persisitence of Mary about the dangers which menace the Church is a divine warning against the suicide that would be represented by the alteration of the faith, in her liturgy, her theology and her soul.... I hear all around me innovators who wish to dismantle the Sacred Chapel, destroy the universal flame of the Church, reject her ornaments and make her feel remorse for her historical past...A day will come when the civilized world will deny its God, when the Church will doubt as Peter doubted. She will be tempted to beleive that man has become God. In our churches, Christians will search in vain for the red lamp where God awaits them. Like Mary Magdalene weeping before the empty tomb, they will ask, "Where have they taken Him?"

Once a Bishop gets infected with the desire to destroy, nothing will stop them, whatever Diocese they are in.

Lest we forget the attack on the Church and the closure of Churches by the Communists. A prayer card from Belgium of the 1950s. Sadly, this did not prevent the infamous, and then secret, 1962 Pact of Metz when the Vatican agreed not to condemn either Russia
or communism in the documents of the Vatican Council.
